Fela Kuti

Early Life

Fela Aníkúlápó Kútì was born on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, into the prominent Ransome-Kuti family. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a notable anti-colonial feminist, while his father, Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was an Anglican minister and educator. Growing up in a politically active household, Fela was influenced by his parents' involvement in the anti-colonial movement, particularly the Abeokuta Women's Riots led by his mother in 1946. He attended Abeokuta Grammar School and later moved to London in 1958 to study music at the Trinity College of Music, where he formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, blending jazz and highlife.

Career

Fela's career took off after he returned to Nigeria in 1963, where he reformed his band and began to innovate the Afrobeat genre, a fusion of traditional African music with jazz and funk. He became known for his politically charged lyrics, addressing issues of corruption and social injustice in Nigeria. His music not only entertained but also served as a powerful tool for activism, leading to his arrest over 200 times due to his outspoken criticism of the Nigerian government. Fela's discography includes iconic albums such as "Zombie," "Gentleman," and "Expensive Shit," which solidified his status as a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance.

Personal Life and Legacy

Fela's personal life was as colorful as his music; he famously married 27 women simultaneously in 1978, with his first wife being Remilekun Taylor. His children, including musicians Femi and Seun Kuti, continue his legacy in music. Fela's activism and music left a lasting impact, leading to the establishment of the annual Felabration festival in his honor. He is remembered as a cultural icon who used his art to challenge societal norms and advocate for change, influencing generations of musicians and activists alike.
