Early Life

Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart was born on September 13, 1977, in New York City to singer Diane McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart. Growing up in Morningside Heights, she was influenced by her family's artistic background, with her mother being a singer and her father an actor. Fiona attended several schools, including St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School and Alexander Hamilton High School, while also being homeschooled. She developed a passion for music early on, studying piano and transcribing guitar tablature into standard notation. Despite her artistic inclinations, Fiona faced significant personal challenges, including struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety, stemming from a traumatic experience at age 12.

Career

Fiona Apple's music career began in 1994 when she recorded a demo tape that caught the attention of Sony Music executive Andy Slater. Her debut album, "Tidal," released in 1996, was a commercial success, selling over 2.7 million copies and earning three Platinum certifications in the U.S. The album featured hit singles like "Criminal" and "Shadowboxer," and Apple's candid acceptance speech at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards showcased her outspoken personality.
