Frank Gorshin

Early Life

Frank John Gorshin Jr. was born on April 5, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Catholic parents of Slovenian descent. His father, Frank Gorshin Sr., was a railroad worker, while his mother, Frances, was a seamstress. Growing up in a Slovenian household, Gorshin spoke mostly Slovene before attending school. At the age of 15, he began working as a cinema usher, where he developed his talent for impressions by mimicking the stars he saw on screen. His first paid performance came as a prize in a talent contest, leading to a week-long engagement at a New York nightclub shortly after the tragic loss of his brother.

Career

After graduating from Peabody High School, Gorshin attended the Carnegie Tech School of Drama (now Carnegie Mellon University) and performed in local plays and nightclubs. In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving as an entertainer in Germany. Upon his return, Gorshin became a prolific film actor and made numerous television appearances, including memorable roles on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, where he appeared 12 times. He was particularly known for his impressionist performances, becoming the first to headline major nightclubs in Las Vegas and New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Gorshin's career spanned several decades, with notable performances in various television series and films.

Personal Life

Gorshin married Christina Randazzo on April 8, 1957, and they had one son, Mitchell. Although they later separated, they remained married until his death in 2005. Gorshin's legacy as a talented actor and impressionist continues to be celebrated, reflecting his significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
