Frank Wedekind

Early Life

Benjamin Franklin Wedekind was born on July 24, 1864, in Hanover, within the German Confederation. His mother, a Swiss national, became pregnant with him while in San Francisco, and his father was a German who owned a Swiss castle. The family relocated from Hanover in 1872, and Wedekind grew up in a unique cultural environment that blended influences from both Switzerland and Germany. Until World War I, he held American citizenship, which allowed him to travel extensively across Europe. He spent most of his adult life in Munich, where he also briefly worked in advertising for the Maggi soup firm in Switzerland in 1886.

Career

Wedekind's career was marked by a diverse range of experiences, including work in business and the circus, before he found his true calling as an actor and singer. He gained significant acclaim as the principal star of the satirical cabaret "Die elf Scharfrichter" ("The Eleven Executioners"), which debuted in 1901. His work was characterized by sharp social criticism, often targeting bourgeois attitudes, and he is credited with anticipating the expressionist movement in theatre. His influence extended to later satirical writers of the Weimar Republic, such as Kurt Tucholsky and Erich Kästner, who followed in his footsteps, using direct satire as a means of social critique. Notably, Wedekind faced a nine-month prison sentence for lèse-majesté due to the publication of his satirical poems in the magazine Simplicissimus.
