Early Life

Frédéric François Chopin was born on February 22, 1810, in Żelazowa Wola, Poland, then part of the Duchy of Warsaw. His father, Nicolas Chopin, was a French émigré who settled in Poland, and his mother, Justyna Krzyżanowska, was of Polish descent. Chopin was the second child and only son in the family, with three sisters. The family moved to Warsaw shortly after his birth, where his father taught French at the Warsaw Lyceum.
