Gary Rossington

Early Life

Gary Robert Rossington was born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida. Growing up in a single-parent household, he initially aspired to be a baseball player, dreaming of joining the New York Yankees. However, his passion shifted to music after he heard The Rolling Stones in his early teens. This newfound interest led him to form a band with friends Ronnie Van Zant and Bob Burns, which eventually evolved into the legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Career

Rossington was a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, where he served as the lead guitarist and contributed to the band's distinctive sound. His career was marked by both triumph and tragedy, including a near-fatal plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of several bandmates. Despite suffering severe injuries, Rossington returned to the stage, showcasing his resilience. He also formed the Rossington Collins Band with fellow guitarist Allen Collins, further cementing his legacy in rock music. Throughout his career, he remained the longest-serving and last surviving original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd until his passing.

Personal Life

In 1982, Rossington married singer Dale Krantz, and together they had two daughters. His health struggles included a heart attack in 2015 and emergency surgery in 2021. Rossington passed away at his home in Milton, Georgia, on March 5, 2023, at the age of 71, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Southern rock.
