Early Life

Terence Michael Joseph "Geezer" Butler was born on July 17, 1949, in Birmingham, England, into a working-class Irish Catholic family. Growing up with six siblings, Butler's childhood was marked by love despite the family's financial struggles. His father, a veteran of the Royal Scots Regiment, worked in engineering, while his mother, originally a nanny, became a housewife. Butler adopted the nickname "Geezer" at a young age, inspired by his brother's Cockney friends who used the term casually. His early life was filled with challenges, including living in a home without basic amenities, yet he described it as an "incredibly loving, happy childhood."

Career

Butler's musical journey began in 1965 with his first band, the Ruums, which sparked his passion for music. He later formed The Rare Breed, where he met future Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne. After a series of band name changes, including Polka Tulk and Earth, Butler and his bandmates settled on the iconic name Black Sabbath in 1969. As the bassist and primary lyricist, Butler played a crucial role in shaping the heavy metal genre, known for his melodic playing and innovative use of the wah pedal. His lyrics often explored themes of religion, science fiction, and the darker aspects of human nature, contributing to the band's legendary status.

Personal Life

Butler's personal life has been as colorful as his music career. He met his first wife, Georgina, at a school dance, but they divorced in 1980. He later married Gloria, who became the manager for Heaven & Hell. Butler is a devoted animal lover and became a strict vegetarian as a child, later transitioning to veganism in the 1990s. He has two sons, Biff and James, the latter of whom is politically active and educated at Oxford University. Butler's commitment to animal rights led him to participate in campaigns for PETA, showcasing his dedication to ethical living.
