Gene Roddenberry

Early Life

Eugene "Gene" Wesley Roddenberry Sr. was born on August 19, 1921, in El Paso, Texas. He was the first child of Eugene Edward Roddenberry and Caroline "Glen" Roddenberry. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1923, where Gene developed a passion for reading, particularly enjoying pulp magazines and stories like John Carter of Mars and Tarzan. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1939, he pursued police science at Los Angeles City College and obtained a pilot's license through the Civilian Pilot Training Program. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Career

Roddenberry's career began in television writing, where he quickly made a name for himself. He became the head writer for "The West Point Story" and wrote for various series, including "Have Gun – Will Travel," which earned him a Writers Guild of America award. His most significant achievement came with the creation of the iconic science fiction series "Star Trek," which debuted in 1966. Roddenberry's vision for a diverse and inclusive future resonated with audiences and laid the groundwork for a vast franchise that continues to thrive today. He also produced several related works, including the album "Inside Star Trek" and the "Star Trek 50th Anniversary Single."

Personal Life

Roddenberry married Eileen-Anita Rexroat in 1942, and they had two daughters. However, his personal life was complex, marked by relationships with co-stars Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett. He eventually married Barrett in a Shinto ceremony in Japan. Despite his professional success, Roddenberry faced health challenges later in life, including strokes and complications from substance use. He passed away on October 24, 1991, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer in science fiction and television.
