George Chakiris

Early Life

George Chakiris was born on September 16, 1932, in Norwood, Ohio, to Greek immigrant parents, Stelianos and Zoe Chakiris. He was raised in a large family, being one of eight siblings. In 1944, the family relocated to Long Beach, California, where George attended local schools and graduated from Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in 1950. After a brief stint at Long Beach City College, he decided to pursue a career in dance, moving to Hollywood to chase his dreams.

Career

Chakiris made his film debut at the young age of 15 in the 1947 film "Song of Love." Over the years, he appeared in numerous musical films, often in small roles as a dancer or chorus member. His notable performances include dancing alongside Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) and appearing in classics like "White Christmas" (1954) and "Brigadoon" (1954). However, it was his role as Bernardo in the 1961 film adaptation of "West Side Story" that catapulted him to fame, earning him both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.

Musical Ventures

In addition to his acting career, Chakiris has also made significant contributions to music. He has released several albums, including "The Gershwin Songbook" and "Rappelle-toi," and singles such as "Limelight" and "Je t'emmène en tango."
