George Takei

Early Life

George Takei, born Hosato Takei on April 20, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, is an American actor, author, and activist known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek franchise. He was born to Japanese American parents, Fumiko Emily Nakamura and Takekuma Norman Takei. During World War II, Takei and his family were forcibly relocated to internment camps due to Executive Order 9066, spending time at Santa Anita Park and later at the Rohwer and Tule Lake War Relocation Centers. The experience of internment deeply affected Takei, especially as he lost family members in Hiroshima during the atomic bombing.

Career

Takei's career began in the late 1950s with voiceover work in Japanese monster films and appearances in various television series. He gained fame for his role in Star Trek, where he portrayed Sulu, a character that became iconic in the science fiction genre. Beyond acting, Takei has contributed to music, with notable releases including "Star Trek - Envoy" and "Star Trek: Cacophony (A Captain Sulu Adventure)." His artistic endeavors also include albums like "Complete Piano Works, Vol. 2: Nocturnes" and "To the Stars."

Activism and Personal Life

In addition to his entertainment career, Takei is a prominent activist for LGBTQ rights and Japanese American issues. He publicly came out as gay in 2005 and has been a vocal advocate for same-sex marriage. Takei married his partner, Brad Altman, in 2008, becoming one of the first same-sex couples to apply for a marriage license in West Hollywood. His activism extends to political engagement, having served as an alternate delegate at the 1972 Democratic National Convention and being appointed to the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District, where he played a role in planning the Los Angeles subway system.
