Early Life

Gerry Rafferty was born on April 16, 1947, in Scotland. He grew up in a musical environment, which influenced his passion for music from a young age. After leaving St Mirin's Academy in 1963, he took on various jobs, including working in a butcher's shop and as a civil service clerk, but he always felt that music was his true calling. During weekends, he played in a local band called the Maverix, covering popular songs of the time.

Career

Rafferty's musical journey began in earnest when he joined the folk-pop group the Humblebums in 1969, alongside comedian Billy Connolly. The duo recorded two albums and gained recognition for their heartfelt songwriting. However, it was his later work with the band Stealers Wheel that brought him widespread fame, particularly with their hit "Stuck in the Middle with You" in 1973. Rafferty's solo career flourished in the late 1970s with iconic tracks like "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line," showcasing his unique blend of rock and folk influences. Over his career, he released several albums, including "City to City" and "Night Owl," solidifying his status as a talented singer-songwriter.

Personal Life

In 1965, Rafferty met Carla Ventilla, whom he married in 1970. They had a daughter, Martha Mary, and lived in Scotland before moving to England. His family life and experiences inspired many of his songs, particularly those on the album "City to City." Despite his success, Rafferty struggled with personal issues, including alcoholism, which affected his later years. He and Carla divorced in 1990, and the death of his brother Joseph in 1995 deeply impacted him. Rafferty passed away on January 4, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of poignant music that continues to resonate with fans.
