Her family moved to Puerto Rico shortly after her birth and later relocated to London, where her father attended the London Film School. Anderson's upbringing was influenced by Buddhism, and she has English, German, and Irish ancestry. At the age of 11, her family returned to the United States, settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
