Early Life

Glynis Margaret Payne Johns was born on October 5, 1923, in Pretoria, South Africa, while her parents were touring. Her mother, Alyce Steele-Wareham, was an accomplished concert pianist, and her father, Mervyn Johns, was a prominent Welsh actor. Glynis was immersed in the arts from a young age, joining the London Ballet School at five and quickly gaining recognition as a talented dancer. By the age of eleven, she was already teaching dance, showcasing her early artistic development.

Career

Johns made her theatrical debut at just three weeks old, carried onto the stage by her grandmother. Her professional career began in earnest at the age of eight when she was cast in Elmer Rice's "Judgement Day". Over the next several decades, she appeared in over 60 films and 30 plays, becoming a celebrated actress and singer. Her notable achievements include winning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award, along with nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Johns was recognized as a Disney Legend and received the National Board of Review Award for Best Actress, solidifying her status as a significant figure in both British and Hollywood cinema.

Personal Life

Throughout her life, Johns was married four times, with her first marriage to actor Anthony Forwood producing a son, Gareth Forwood. Her relationships were often intertwined with her career, as she met her second husband, producer Antony Darnborough, during a production. Johns' final marriage was to writer Elliott Arnold, reflecting her complex personal life amidst her illustrious career.
