Early Life

Faegheh Atashin, known professionally as Googoosh, was born on May 5, 1950, in Tehran, Iran, to Iranian Azerbaijani parents. From a young age, she was affectionately called "Googoosh," an Armenian name typically used for boys, which later became her stage name. Her early exposure to the arts came from her father, Saber, a cabaret artist and acrobat, who influenced her career path.

Career

Googoosh began her career as a singer and dancer in her father's stage shows, quickly transitioning to film in the 1960s, where she starred in several movies, including the notable "Fear and Hope." By the 1970s, she had established herself as a pop icon, known for her flamboyant style and emotional ballads that resonated with audiences both in Iran and abroad. Her music, which blended traditional Persian sounds with modern pop, earned her a dedicated following, and she performed for the royal family, becoming a favorite of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's family.

The 1979 Iranian Revolution marked a significant turning point in her life. While she was in Los Angeles at the time, she chose to return to Iran, driven by a deep love for her homeland. However, her career was stifled, and she faced imprisonment for nearly a month shortly after the revolution. Despite these challenges, Googoosh's influence and legacy in Iranian music remain profound, with her career spanning over six decades.

Personal Life

Googoosh's personal life has been marked by several marriages, including her first to Mahmoud Ghorbani, with whom she had a son, Kambiz. She has been married multiple times, including a brief union with actor Behrouz Vossoughi and a later marriage to director Masoud Kimiai. In recent years, she has spoken about her evolving beliefs, identifying as a non-practicing Muslim since 2004. Her enduring spirit and connection to her roots continue to inspire many, as she remains a beloved figure in Iranian culture.
