Gregorio Allegri

Early Life

Gregorio Allegri was born in Rome, Italy, in 1582, into a family that would see him become a prominent figure in the world of music. He began his musical education as a boy chorister at San Luigi dei Francesi, where he studied under Giovanni Bernardino Nanino. His early training laid the foundation for a life dedicated to music and the Catholic Church.

Career

Allegri's career flourished as he obtained a benefice in the cathedral of Fermo, where he composed numerous motets and sacred music. His talent caught the attention of Pope Urban VIII, leading to his appointment as a contralto in the Sistine Chapel choir in 1629, a position he held until his death in 1652. Throughout his career, Allegri composed a variety of works, including two volumes of concerti for five voices and several masses. He is best known for his "Miserere," a choral work that showcases his mastery of polyphony and remains a staple of choral repertoire today.

Legacy

Allegri's contributions to music extend beyond his compositions; he is recognized as one of the earliest composers for stringed instruments and is credited with the earliest string quartet. His style reflects the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque period, with his works for the Sistine Chapel drawing from the Palestrina style while incorporating progressive elements of the early Baroque. Allegri's virtuous character and generosity towards the poor and prisoners further cement his legacy as not only a composer but also a compassionate individual.
