Early Life

Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher on March 17, 1988, in Vancouver, British Columbia, is a Canadian musician, singer, and record producer. She is the daughter of Sandy Garossino, a former Crown prosecutor, and Maurice Boucher, a banker. Grimes has a diverse heritage, being of French Canadian and Italian descent, with family roots tracing back to Ukraine. Raised in a Roman Catholic household, her upbringing significantly influenced her artistic expression, leading her to explore themes of science fiction and feminism in her work. After graduating from Lord Byng Secondary School in 2006, she moved to Montreal to study at McGill University, where she initially pursued a degree in electro-acoustics but was expelled in 2010 for poor attendance.

Career

Grimes began her music career in 2007, releasing tracks on Myspace under her stage name, which she chose without knowing the genre of grime. Her debut album, "Geidi Primes," was released in January 2010, followed by her second album, "Halfaxa," later that year. Her breakthrough came with the release of her third album, "Visions," in 2012, which garnered critical acclaim and established her as a prominent figure in the music industry. Grimes' unique sound blends various genres, including synth-pop, art pop, and experimental music, and she has been recognized for her innovative approach to music production. Over the years, she has released several successful albums, including "Art Angels" and "Miss Anthropocene," and has collaborated with various artists, showcasing her versatility and artistic growth.

Personal Life

Grimes has been open about her personal struggles, including her experiences with autism, ADHD, and a lisp, which she embraces as part of her identity. She has also candidly discussed her past drug use during the creation of her album "Visions." Her brother, Mac Boucher, has contributed to her music videos, and she has collaborated with her stepbrother, Jay Worthy, on various projects. Grimes' adventurous spirit is highlighted by her attempt to travel down the Mississippi River in a houseboat, an experience that became a part of her artistic narrative.
