Guillaume IX d’Aquitaine

Early Life

Guillaume IX d’Aquitaine, also known as William IX, was born into nobility as the son of William VIII of Aquitaine and his third wife, Hildegarde of Burgundy. His birth in 1071 was celebrated at the Aquitanian court, although the Church initially deemed him illegitimate due to his parents' consanguinity and his father's previous divorces. This led to a pilgrimage by his father to Rome to seek papal approval for their marriage and William's legitimacy.

Ducal Career

William inherited the duchy of Aquitaine at the young age of fifteen following his father's death. He was a prominent figure in the Crusade of 1101 and was known for his political maneuvers, including inviting Pope Urban II to his court in 1095. His marriage to Philippa of Toulouse in 1094 solidified his political alliances, and together they had two sons and five daughters, with his eldest son, William X, succeeding him.

Poetic Legacy

While William IX was a notable warrior, his most enduring legacy lies in his contributions to music as a troubadour. He is recognized as the earliest troubadour whose works have survived, with eleven songs attributed to him, showcasing themes of love, feudal politics, and his own prowess. His lyrical style employed the Romance vernacular language, Occitan, and he is remembered for his courtly demeanor and charm, often depicted as a seducer of women. An anonymous 13th-century vida describes him as a fine composer and singer, highlighting his dual legacy as both a nobleman and a poet.
