Early Life

Gulzar, born Sampooran Singh Kalra on August 18, 1936, in Dina, Jhelum District (now in Pakistan), grew up in a Sikh Khatri family. His early education was marked by a profound influence from the works of Tagore, which he encountered in school. The partition of India forced his family to relocate to Mumbai, where he took on various small jobs to support them, including working at a garage. Despite his father's initial disapproval of his writing aspirations, he adopted the pen name Gulzar and began to carve out a niche for himself in the literary world.

Career

Gulzar's career as a lyricist began in 1963 with the film "Bandini," where he collaborated with renowned music director S.D. Burman. His unique lyrical style, characterized by a blend of poetic sensibility and emotional depth, quickly gained recognition. He worked with notable composers like R.D. Burman and A.R. Rahman, contributing to the soundtracks of numerous films. His work in films such as "Khamoshi" and "Aandhi" showcased his ability to infuse songs with profound meaning, earning him accolades including the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008. Gulzar also ventured into directing, with films like "Mausam" and the acclaimed TV series "Mirza Ghalib."

Personal Life

Gulzar is married to actress Raakhee, and they have a daughter, Meghna Gulzar, who has followed in her father's footsteps as a filmmaker. Meghna has directed several successful films and even authored a biography of her father. Gulzar's contributions to literature and cinema have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, solidifying his legacy as one of India's most revered poets and lyricists.
