Guru

Early Life

Keith Edward Elam, known professionally as Guru, was born on July 17, 1961, in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He was raised in a family with a strong educational background; his father, Harry Justin Elam, Sr., was a prominent lawyer and the first African American judge appointed to the Boston Municipal Court. His mother, Barbara, served as the co-director of libraries in the Boston Public Schools system. Guru attended several prestigious schools, including the Advent School and Noble and Greenough School, before graduating with a degree in business administration from Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Musical Career

Guru began his music career under the name MC Keithy E but later adopted the stage name Guru. In 1987, he co-founded the influential hip-hop duo Gang Starr with DJ Premier. Their early work received little attention, but after a lineup change, they released their first LP, "No More Mr. Nice Guy," which garnered a significant following. Over the years, Gang Starr produced six critically acclaimed albums, including the gold-certified "Moment of Truth" and the compilation "Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr." In addition to his work with Gang Starr, Guru launched a solo career with the "Jazzmatazz" series, blending hip-hop with jazz and featuring collaborations with notable artists.

Legacy

Guru's impact on music is profound, particularly in the realms of hip-hop and jazz. His innovative approach to blending genres has left a lasting legacy, recognized by the naming of a street "Allée Guru" in Montpellier, France, honoring his contributions to both musical styles. Guru passed away in 2010, but his work continues to influence artists and fans around the world.
