Henric van Veldeke

Early Life

Henric van Veldeke, also known as Heinrich von Veldeke, was born in the 12th century in Veldeke, a hamlet that is now part of Spalbeek in Hasselt, Belgium. He is recognized as the first writer in the Low Countries known by name who composed works in a European language other than Latin. His birthplace is celebrated for its historical significance, with the Vel(de)kermolen, a water mill on the Demer River, being the only remaining structure from the hamlet.

Career

Veldeke's literary contributions began with his notable work, "The Life of Saint Servatius," which is considered the first literary work in Dutch. Written around 1170, this biography details the life and miracles of Servatius of Maastricht, the town's patron saint. The work is divided into two parts, with the first part focusing on Servatius's life and the second on his posthumous miracles. Veldeke's writing style and themes reflect the cultural and religious milieu of his time, showcasing the importance of pilgrimage and divine mercy.

Legacy

Henric van Veldeke's influence on German literary history is profound, as evidenced by the preservation of his lyrics and the Eneas Romance in Middle High German manuscripts.
