Formation

Hoobastank is an American rock band formed in 1994 in Agoura Hills, California, by vocalist Doug Robb, guitarist Dan Estrin, drummer Chris Hesse, and original bassist Markku Lappalainen. The band's name has various claimed origins, including a mispronunciation of a German street and slang for a sneaker enthusiast. They began their journey by performing at the Cobalt Cafe in Los Angeles alongside notable acts like Incubus and Linkin Park.

Early Releases and Breakthrough

In 1998, Hoobastank self-released their debut album, "They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To," which showcased their early funk metal and ska punk influences. After gaining traction in Southern California, they signed with Island Records in 2000. Their self-titled album, released in 2001, marked a shift to a more alternative rock sound, leading to their breakthrough with the hit single "The Reason" from their second album of the same name in 2003. This album solidified their place in the rock scene, selling over ten million copies worldwide.

Evolution and Recent Work

Over the years, Hoobastank has released several albums, including "Every Man for Himself" (2006), "For(n)ever" (2010), and their latest, "Push Pull" (2018). The band has undergone lineup changes, with Jeremy Wasser departing in 2000, but the core members—Robb, Estrin, and Hesse—have remained since their inception. Their music has evolved, incorporating elements of post-grunge and hard rock, while maintaining a melodic style influenced by bands like Faith No More. Hoobastank continues to tour and create music, leaving a lasting impact on the alternative rock genre.
