Biography
Early Life
Howard Leslie Shore was born on October 18, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Jewish parents Bernice and Mac Shore. He began his musical journey at a young age, studying music around the age of 8 or 9. Shore learned to play multiple instruments and started performing in bands by the time he was 13. During his teenage years, he formed a significant friendship with Lorne Michaels at summer camp, which would later influence his career. After graduating from Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, he pursued formal music education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Career
Shore's professional career began in the late 1960s when he joined the jazz fusion band Lighthouse from 1969 to 1972. He became the music director for Lorne Michaels' short-lived TV program, The Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour, in 1970. His notable contributions to music continued as he served as the musical director for NBC's Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980, where he appeared in various musical sketches. Shore is best known for his film scores, particularly for Peter Jackson's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He has collaborated extensively with director David Cronenberg, scoring nearly all of his films since 1979.
Personal Life
Howard Shore is married to Elizabeth Cotnoir, a writer and producer, and they have one daughter. He is also the uncle of film composer Ryan Shore. As of 2004, he resides in Tuxedo Park, New York, where he continues to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide.
Legacy
Shore's contributions to film music have earned him numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He has also received multiple Golden Globe and Grammy Awards, solidifying his status as one of the leading composers in the film industry. His artistic vision was recognized with an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from York University in 2007, celebrating his significant impact on music and film.
