Hugo Wolf

Early Life

Hugo Philipp Jacob Wolf was born on March 13, 1860, in Windischgrätz, now known as Slovenj Gradec in Slovenia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire. He was the son of Filip Wolf and Katharina Nußbaumer. A child prodigy, Wolf began his musical education at the tender age of four, learning piano and violin from his father. His early education was tumultuous; he struggled with subjects outside of music, leading to his dismissal from several schools. Eventually, he attended the Vienna Conservatory but was expelled after two years due to disciplinary issues, a reflection of his rebellious spirit.

Career

Wolf became a prominent figure in the world of Lieder, or art songs, during the late Romantic period. His work is characterized by a unique expressive intensity, drawing inspiration from the innovations of Richard Wagner while also diverging in technique.
