Ian McShane

Early Life

Ian David McShane was born on September 29, 1942, in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. He is the son of professional footballer Harry McShane and Irene Cowley. Growing up in Davyhulme, Lancashire, he attended Stretford Grammar School and later became a member of the National Youth Theatre. McShane honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he studied alongside notable actors like Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt. His early career began with a role in the film "The Wild and the Willing" in 1962, while still a student.

Career

McShane's career took off in the UK with his portrayal of antiques dealer Lovejoy in the series of the same name, which aired from 1986 to 1994. He gained further recognition for his roles in various television series and films, including playing Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights" (1967) and Al Swearengen in HBO's "Deadwood" (2004-2006), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama. His versatility also led him to roles in science fiction, notably as Robert Bryson in "Babylon 5: The River of Souls." In 1985, he served as the MC on Grace Jones' concept album "Slave to the Rhythm," which sold over a million copies worldwide.

Personal Life

McShane's personal life has been as colorful as his career. He was first married to actress Suzan Farmer in 1965, but they divorced in 1968. He then married model Ruth Post, with whom he had two children, Kate and Morgan, before their marriage ended in 1977. He later married American actress Gwen Humble in 1980, and they reside in Venice, California. McShane is also a proud grandfather to three grandchildren through his elder daughter.
