Formation

Immortal is a renowned Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991 in Bergen by frontman and guitarist Abbath Doom Occulta and guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta. The duo emerged from the ashes of two earlier bands, Old Funeral and Amputation, which laid the groundwork for their distinctive sound. Initially, Immortal's lineup included Armagedda on drums and Jørn on guitar, but the band soon solidified its core with Abbath on bass and lead vocals, and Demonaz on guitar.

Breakthrough

The band's early work was characterized by a raw death metal sound, but they quickly transitioned to black metal with their self-titled EP in 1991. Their debut album, "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism," released in 1992, marked a significant shift in style, showcasing their unique blend of dark themes and atmospheric soundscapes. This was followed by the critically acclaimed albums "Pure Holocaust" (1993) and "Battles in the North" (1995), which solidified their status in the black metal scene. In 1996, former drummer Horgh joined the band, further enhancing their musical prowess.

Evolution and Legacy

Over the years, Immortal has released several influential albums, including "Blizzard Beasts" (1997), "At the Heart of Winter" (1999), and "Sons of Northern Darkness" (2002). Their lyrical themes often revolve around a fictional realm called Blashyrkh, inspired by the Norwegian landscape and the feelings of isolation experienced by the band members. Despite lineup changes, including the departure of Abbath in 2015, Immortal continues to be a significant force in the black metal genre, with Demonaz leading the band into new eras while maintaining their signature sound.
