Early Life

Irene Cara Escalera was born on March 18, 1959, in the Bronx, New York City, as the youngest of five children. Her father, Gaspar Cara, was a Puerto Rican steel factory worker and retired saxophonist, while her mother, Louise Escalera, was a Cuban movie theater usher. From a young age, Cara showed a passion for performing, taking dance lessons at just five years old. She began her career in the spotlight on Spanish-language television and made early appearances on shows like The Original Amateur Hour and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. By the age of 12, she was a regular on PBS's educational program The Electric Company, showcasing her singing and dancing talents.

Career

Cara's career took off with her role in the Broadway show Maggie Flynn, and she later gained fame for her portrayal of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame. Not only did she act in the film, but she also sang its title song, which became a global hit. In 1983, she co-wrote and performed "Flashdance... What a Feeling," earning her an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Throughout her career, Cara released several albums, including Esta es Irene, Anyone Can See, and What a Feelin’, and she was known for her contributions to pop, disco, and R&B music.

Personal Life and Legacy

Irene Cara married stuntman and film director Conrad Palmisano in 1986, but the couple divorced in 1991 without children. She lived in Florida at the time of her death on November 25, 2022, at the age of 63, due to arteriosclerosis and hypertensive heart disease. Cara's legacy as a talented singer and actress continues to inspire many, particularly for her groundbreaking roles and contributions to music and film, making her a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
