Early Life

Jürgen Prochnow was born on June 10, 1941, in Berlin, Germany, and grew up in Düsseldorf. His father was an engineer, which likely influenced Prochnow's disciplined approach to his craft.

Career

Prochnow's career took off with his iconic role as the U-boat Commander "Der Alte" in the 1981 war film "Das Boot," which showcased his ability to portray complex characters with depth and empathy. He continued to build his filmography with notable performances in films such as "Forbidden" (1985), which earned a nomination for the German Film Award for Outstanding Feature Film, and "The Seventh Sign" (1988). Prochnow also portrayed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the biographical film "See Arnold Run" (2005) and played Commander Paul Gerald in the sci-fi film "Wing Commander" (1999). His versatility is further highlighted by his role as the antagonist in the comedy "Beerfest" (2006). Prochnow has a unique connection to the world of dubbing, having lent his voice to Sylvester Stallone in the German versions of several films, including "Rocky" and "Rocky II," and later taking over the role of Stallone's voice actor in 2018 with "Creed II."

Personal Life

Prochnow's personal life has been marked by both tragedy and resilience. In the early 1980s, he was in a relationship with Austrian actress Antonia Reininghaus, which ended in heartbreak when their daughter, Johanna, was fatally poisoned in 1987. He married Isabel Goslar in 1982, with whom he had two children, but they divorced in 1997. His second marriage to actress Birgit Stein lasted from 2004 until her tragic death in a motorcycle accident in 2018. Since 2015, he has been married to actress Verena Wengler. Prochnow became a U.S. citizen in 2004 and has since divided his time between Los Angeles and Berlin, announcing in 2017 that he would be relocating to Berlin permanently.
