Early Life

Clyde Jackson Browne was born on October 9, 1948, in Heidelberg, Germany, where his father served as an American serviceman. His mother, Beatrice Amanda, hailed from Minnesota and had Norwegian ancestry. The family moved to Los Angeles when Browne was three years old, settling in Abbey San Encino. Growing up, he developed a passion for music, performing folk songs in local venues during his teenage years, including the renowned Ash Grove and The Troubadour Club. He graduated from Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, in 1966.

Career

Browne's musical journey began after high school when he joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, where he showcased his songwriting talents. He later moved to Greenwich Village, New York, becoming a staff writer for Elektra's publishing company. His early songs were recorded by notable artists such as Nico, Joan Baez, and the Eagles. Browne's debut album, "Jackson Browne / Saturate Before Using," was released in 1972, followed by a string of successful albums, including "For Everyman," "Late for the Sky," and "Running on Empty." Over his career, he has sold over 30 million albums in the United States and has been recognized with numerous awards, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Personal Life and Activism

Browne has been married twice and has two children. His first marriage to actress Phyllis Major ended tragically with her death in 1976. He later married model Lynne Sweeney, with whom he had a son, Ryan. Beyond music, Browne is known for his environmental activism, co-founding MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) and advocating against single-use plastics. His commitment to social justice and humanitarian efforts has earned him several accolades, including the Gandhi Peace Award and the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award.
