Early Life

Jada Koren Pinkett Smith was born on September 18, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland. Named after her mother’s favorite soap opera actress, Jada Rowland, she is of Jamaican and Bajan descent on her mother’s side and African-American descent on her father’s side. Raised by her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and her grandmother, Marion Martin Banfield, Jada developed a passion for the performing arts early on. She took piano, tap dance, and ballet lessons, and participated in a competitive after-school program called TWIGs, which helped her gain admission to the Baltimore School for the Arts.

Career

Jada began her acting career in 1990 with a guest role on the television show "True Colors". She gained recognition for her role as Lena James on the hit sitcom "A Different World". Her film debut came in 1993 with "Menace II Society", where she was cast as Ronnie, a role recommended by her close friend Tupac Shakur.
