James Cagney

Early Life

James Francis Cagney Jr. was born on July 17, 1899, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He was the second of seven children in a family of Irish and Norwegian descent. Cagney's father, James Sr., was a bartender and amateur boxer, while his mother, Carolyn, was a homemaker. Growing up in poverty, Cagney faced health challenges as a child, which he later attributed to his family's struggles. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1918 and briefly attended Columbia College, where he intended to study art before dropping out after one semester due to his father's death.

Career

Cagney's career began in 1919 when he joined the chorus of the wartime play "Every Sailor." His energetic performances and distinctive vocal style quickly garnered attention, leading to a successful career in film and theater. He became known for his roles in gangster and crime films, earning acclaim for his performances. Cagney's work earned him numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Actor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received the AFI Life Achievement Award.

Personal Life

In 1922, Cagney married Frances Willard "Billie" Vernon, and they remained together until his death in 1986. The couple adopted two children, James III and Cathleen. Cagney was known for his private nature, often shying away from the public eye despite his fame. He had a passion for farming, which led him to establish a 100-acre farm in Martha's Vineyard. Cagney's political views evolved over time, and he became involved in labor movements, notably opposing the "Merriam tax" during the 1934 Californian gubernatorial campaign.
