Early Life

James Francis Gunn Jr. was born on August 5, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri, into a family with a rich cultural background, including Irish and Jewish heritage. Raised in a Catholic household, he grew up in the suburb of Manchester, where he was influenced by low-budget horror films and began making 8 mm zombie movies with his brothers at the age of 12. Gunn attended St. Louis University High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University, where he also created political cartoons for the student newspaper. He briefly attended film school at Loyola Marymount University before leaving to pursue his career.

Career

Gunn's career in music began in 1989 when he founded the band The Icons, serving as the lead vocalist. The group released their album "Mom, We Like It Here on Earth" in 1994, with songs featured in his early film work, including "Tromeo and Juliet" (1996). Transitioning to filmmaking, he gained recognition for his work with Troma Entertainment and later directed successful films such as "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and its sequels. His unique blend of humor and action has made him a prominent figure in the superhero genre, culminating in his recent projects like "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" (2023) and the upcoming "Superman" (2025).

Personal Life

Gunn's personal life has been marked by significant relationships, including his marriage to actress Jenna Fischer in 2000, which ended in divorce in 2008. He has been in a relationship with actress Jennifer Holland since 2015, and they became engaged in 2022. A passionate advocate for animal adoption, Gunn adopted a dog named Ozu in 2022, which inspired his work on the animated character Krypto the Superdog. His commitment to social issues is evident in his outspoken political views, particularly his criticism of the Trump administration, which he has described as a "national crisis."
