Jarvis Cocker

Early Life and Education

Jarvis Cocker was born in 1963 and grew up in Sheffield, England. He attended City School, where he first developed an interest in music. His father, Mac Cocker, a DJ and actor, left the family when Jarvis was just seven years old, leading to a challenging upbringing with his mother, Christine Connolly. Despite the difficulties, Cocker channeled his experiences into his music, notably writing a song about his father's abandonment. In the late 1980s, he took a break from performing to study Fine Art and Film at Saint Martin's School of Art, graduating in 1991.

Career

Cocker founded the band Pulp at the age of 15, initially named Arabicus Pulp. The band struggled for years before achieving fame in the 1990s with albums like "His 'n' Hers" and "Different Class." Cocker's unique style, characterized by his glasses and engaging stage presence, made him a standout figure in the Britpop movement. Pulp continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including "This Is Hardcore" and "We Love Life," before going on hiatus in 2003. They reunited in 2011 and returned to the music scene in 2022 with a new album, "More," which topped the charts.

Personal Life and Activism

Cocker's personal life has been as colorful as his music career. He once fell out of a window while attempting a Spider-Man impression, resulting in a brief hospitalization. He has lived in Paris and has a son with his ex-wife, Camille Bidault-Waddington. As of 2023, he resides in Shepherd's Bush, London, with his current wife, Kim Sion. Cocker is also known for his activism, having supported various causes, including Artists for Palestine UK and the Remain campaign during the EU referendum.
