Early Life

Jason Thomas Mraz was born on June 23, 1977, in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Raised by his father, Tom Mraz, a postal worker, and his mother, June Tomes, a vice president at a Bank of America branch, Mraz experienced a childhood marked by his parents' divorce when he was just five years old. He attended Lee-Davis High School, where he was active in the cheerleading squad, school chorus, and drama club, even starring in productions like "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." After high school, Mraz pursued musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, where he began to explore his passion for music.

Music Career

Mraz's music career took off after he moved to San Diego in 1999, where he became a roadie for the band Elgin Park and began performing at Java Joe's coffee house. He self-published several albums, including "A Jason Mraz Demonstration" and "Live at Java Joe's," which helped him build a local following. In 2002, he released his major label debut album, "Waiting for My Rocket to Come," featuring the hit single "The Remedy," which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mraz's subsequent albums, including "Mr. A-Z" and "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things," solidified his status as a prominent figure in pop music, showcasing his unique blend of genres such as pop, rock, and blue-eyed soul.

Personal Life

Mraz leads a health-conscious lifestyle, primarily following a raw vegan diet, which he credits for influencing his music. He owns an avocado farm in Oceanside, California, and is an investor in a vegan restaurant, Café Gratitude. Mraz has been open about his bisexuality, having penned a love letter to the LGBT community in 2018. He has been married twice, first to Sheridan Edley in 2001, and later to Christina Carano in 2015, though he announced their divorce in 2023.
