Early Life

Jessie Buckley was born on December 28, 1989, in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, to Marina and Tim Buckley. Growing up in a musical family, she was encouraged to explore her artistic talents from a young age. Buckley attended Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles, where she excelled in school productions, taking on male roles in musicals like "West Side Story" and "Chess." She reached grade eight in piano, clarinet, and harp at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and was a member of the Tipperary Millennium Orchestra. Her passion for acting and music led her to attend summer workshops with the Association of Irish Musical Societies, where she was recognized for her talent and encouraged to pursue drama school in London.

Career

Buckley began her career as a contestant on the talent show "I'd Do Anything," where she competed for the lead role of Nancy in the West End revival of "Oliver!" Although she finished as a runner-up in 2008, the experience shaped her resilience in the industry. Following her time on the show, she performed at various concerts, including a notable outdoor concert in Hyde Park, London. Buckley has since built a successful career in both music and acting, earning accolades such as an Academy Award, two BAFTAs, and a Golden Globe for her performances. Her role as Agnes Shakespeare in the film "Hamnet" earned her the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama in 2026.

Personal Life

As of 2022, Buckley resides in Norfolk, England. She married Freddie Sorensen, a mental health worker, in mid-2023, and they welcomed their daughter in 2025. Buckley has openly discussed her struggles with an eating disorder and depression during her teenage years, crediting her passion for acting and music as vital in overcoming these challenges. Her journey reflects a deep commitment to her craft and a desire to inspire others facing similar battles.
