Jim Henson

Early Life

James Maury Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, to Betty Marcella and Paul Ransom Henson Sr. He was the younger of two children and spent his early years in Leland, Mississippi, before moving to Maryland in the late 1940s. Henson was heavily influenced by early television puppetry and radio ventriloquism, which sparked his interest in puppetry. He attended various schools, ultimately graduating from Northwestern High School, where he joined the puppetry club. Henson later enrolled at the University of Maryland, where he took a puppetry class that would shape his future career.

Career

Henson's professional journey began in 1954 when he worked at WTOP-TV, performing with marionettes on a children's show. His talent quickly led to the creation of "Sam and Friends," a puppet show that aired on local television. Henson's innovative approach to puppetry culminated in the creation of the Muppets, which gained worldwide fame through shows like "Sesame Street" and productions such as "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth." His work earned him numerous accolades, including the Peabody Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life

Henson married fellow puppeteer Jane Nebel in 1959, and they had five children together. Despite their separation in 1986, they remained close throughout his life. Henson was a supporter of the civil rights movement and had a deep interest in mystical philosophies, which he explored through the Seth Material. His family often worked alongside him, with his children becoming involved in the Muppets from a young age.

Legacy

After Henson's untimely death on May 16, 1990, his legacy continued through the Jim Henson Company and the Jim Henson Foundation, which produced new series and specials. The Muppets remain a beloved part of popular culture, with characters like Kermit the Frog continuing to entertain audiences.
