Biography
Early Life
Jimmy Dorsey was born on Leap Day, February 29, 1904, in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, to Theresa Langton Dorsey and Thomas Francis Dorsey. His father, initially a coal miner, later became a music teacher and marching-band director, fostering a musical environment for his sons. By age seven, Jimmy was already performing with his father's band, and he made his public debut at nine, playing trumpet with J. Carson McGee's King Trumpeters in New York. He transitioned to alto saxophone in 1915 and later learned clarinet, developing a unique style with the Albert system clarinet.
Alongside his younger brother Tommy, Jimmy formed Dorsey's Novelty Six, which later became known as Dorsey's Wild Canaries, one of the first jazz bands to broadcast. In 1924, he joined the California Ramblers and engaged in extensive freelance work throughout the 1920s. Notably, he played clarinet on the iconic jazz standard "Georgia on My Mind" in 1930.
Career
Jimmy Dorsey's career flourished as he collaborated with various ensembles and artists, including the Scranton Sirens and Paul Whiteman. He played the clarinet solo on the 1927 jazz standard "Singin' the Blues" with the Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra, which was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. After returning from a European tour with Ted Lewis's band, he and Tommy formed the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, which became a significant force in the big band era. Their first charting song was "Coquette," featuring vocals from Bill Dutton.
Dorsey was also a prolific radio performer, appearing on over seventy-five broadcasts, many alongside his brother. His contributions to jazz and pop standards include hits like "I'm Glad There Is You" and "Amapola." He continued to innovate and influence the genre until his passing in 1957, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by fans and musicians alike.
