Biography
Early Life
Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading was born on December 9, 1950, in Basseterre, Saint Christopher and Nevis, as the third of six children. At the age of three, she moved to Birmingham, England, to join her parents, who had initially relocated there. Armatrading spent some time living with her grandmother in Antigua before reuniting with her family. Her father, a carpenter, had a musical background but forbade his children from touching his guitar. At 14, she began writing songs and taught herself to play guitar with a pawned instrument her mother bought for £3. Leaving school at 15 to support her family, she faced challenges in her early jobs due to her passion for music.
Career
Armatrading's musical journey began at 16 when she performed at the University of Birmingham. She joined the touring production of the musical "Hair" in 1968, where she met lyricist Pam Nestor. Their collaboration led to her debut album, "Whatever's for Us," released in 1972. Her breakthrough came with her third and fourth albums, "Joan Armatrading" (1976) and "Show Some Emotion" (1977). Over the years, she has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. Known for her contralto voice and diverse musical influences, her songs often explore themes of love and human experience.
Personal Life
Armatrading values her privacy and is selective about sharing personal details. She earned a BA degree in history from the Open University in 2001 and has been involved with various charitable organizations, including the Prince's Trust. In 2011, she entered a civil partnership with artist Maggie Butler in Scotland. Residing in Surrey, she owns Bumpkin Studios, where she has recorded many of her albums. Armatrading was a guest at the coronation of Charles III and Camilla in 2023, marking her continued presence in the cultural landscape of the UK.
