Joel Grey, born Joel David Katz on April 11, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, is a multifaceted American artist known for his work as an actor, singer, dancer, photographer, and theatre director. He is the son of Goldie "Grace" Epstein and Mickey Katz, both of whom were Jewish. Grey's artistic journey began early; he participated in the Cleveland Play House's children's theatre program at just 10 years old, showcasing his talent in various productions.

Career

Grey's career took off in the early 1950s when he performed at the Copacabana nightclub in New York. He adopted the stage name "Grey" to avoid the stigma associated with his original surname. His Broadway debut came with "Borscht Capades," and he gained significant recognition for his role as the Emcee in the musical "Cabaret" in 1966, a performance that earned him a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. His portrayal in the film adaptation of "Cabaret" further solidified his status, earning him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

Throughout his career, Grey has received numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2023. He has also made significant contributions to photography, publishing several books and holding exhibitions of his work.

Grey was married to Jo Wilder from 1958 until their divorce in 1982, and they have two children, including actress Jennifer Grey.
