Johannes Heesters

Early Life

Johan Marius Nicolaas Heesters, known as Johannes Heesters, was born on December 5, 1903, in Amersfoort, Netherlands, as the youngest of four sons. His father, Jacobus Heesters, was a salesman, while his mother, Geertruida Jacoba van den Heuvel, was a homemaker. Heesters was exposed to the German language early in life, having lived with a German great uncle in Bavaria. At the age of 16, he decided to pursue a career in acting and singing, beginning his vocal training and specializing in Viennese operetta.

Career

Heesters made his stage debut in 1934 in Carl Millöcker's operetta "Der Bettelstudent". His career spanned several decades, during which he became a prominent figure in the German-speaking entertainment world. He gained fame as a film star in Nazi Germany, a period that later sparked controversy in his native Netherlands. Despite this, he maintained his popularity in Germany until his death, performing until the remarkable age of 108. His discography includes notable albums such as "Ein Glück, daß man sich so verlieben kann" and "Ich werde 100 Jahre alt".

Personal Life

Heesters married Louisa Ghijs in 1930, with whom he had two daughters. After her passing in 1985, he remarried in 1992 to German actress Simone Rethel. He had a vibrant personal philosophy, stating, "My secret to a long, healthy life is love and passion; age differences do not matter." He continued to perform actively until late in life, giving his last public performance on October 31, 2011. He passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of two daughters, five grandchildren, and numerous accolades, including the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Ring of Honour of the City of Vienna.
