Early Life

John Sherwood de Lancie, Jr. was born on March 20, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, into a musically inclined family. His father, John de Lancie, was the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and his mother, Andrea, was French. Growing up, John faced challenges due to dyslexia, which made reading difficult until he was 12. Encouraged by a teacher to pursue acting, he began performing at the age of 14 in a high school production of Shakespeare's "Henry V." He later studied acting at Kent State University and won a scholarship to Juilliard, where he honed his craft.

Career

De Lancie's career took off with his iconic role as Q in the "Star Trek" franchise, where he portrayed the mischievous, god-like character across multiple series, including "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Voyager."
