Early Life

John Herschel Glenn Jr. was born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. He grew up in New Concord, where his father owned a plumbing business. From a young age, Glenn was fascinated by flight, inspired by his first airplane ride with his father at the age of eight. He attended New Concord High School, excelling in sports and academics, and later enrolled at Muskingum College. His early life was marked by a strong sense of community and a passion for aviation.

Military and NASA Career

Glenn's military career began when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he became a Marine Corps aviator. After the war, he joined NASA and made history as the third American in space and the first to orbit the Earth in 1962, completing three orbits. His contributions to space exploration were significant, and he became a national hero. After retiring from NASA, Glenn served as a U.S. senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999, where he focused on environmental policies and nuclear non-proliferation.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1998, at the age of 77, Glenn returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to fly in space. His legacy is marked by numerous awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
