John Stephen Goodman was born on June 20, 1952, in Affton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. He faced early challenges, losing his father at the tender age of two, which left him feeling alone and withdrawn during his childhood. Raised by his mother, Virginia Roos, Goodman found solace in the Boy Scouts and later in acting, which provided him with the structure and camaraderie he craved. Career

Goodman's career began to take off after he graduated from Southwest Missouri State University and moved to New York City.
