John Arthur Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York, into a family deeply rooted in the arts. His mother, Sarah Jane, was a retired actress, while his father, Arthur Lithgow, was a theatrical producer and director. Growing up, Lithgow's family moved frequently due to his father's career, which exposed him to various cultural influences. He spent his childhood in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he was babysat by civil rights activist Coretta Scott King.
