John Petrucci

Early Life

John Peter Petrucci was born on July 12, 1967, in Kings Park, New York, into an Italian American family. His musical journey began at the age of eight when he first picked up the guitar, inspired by his older sister's late-night organ practice. After a brief hiatus, he resumed playing at twelve, dedicating himself to six hours of practice daily. Influenced by rock legends like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Petrucci honed his skills through jam sessions with local musicians and developed a passion for progressive rock and heavy metal, drawing inspiration from bands such as Rush and Iron Maiden.

Career

Petrucci's career took off when he joined a cover band with childhood friend Kevin Moore, leading to the formation of the band Majesty, which later became known as Dream Theater. As a founding member, he has been instrumental in shaping the band's sound and has produced all of their albums since 1999. In addition to his work with Dream Theater, Petrucci has released solo albums, including "Suspended Animation" in 2005 and "Terminal Velocity" in 2020. He is also known for his guitar instructional video, "Rock Discipline," and has participated in the G3 guitar tour alongside legends like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Personal Life

Outside of music, Petrucci resides in St. James, New York, with his wife Rena Sands, a guitarist in the all-female heavy metal band Meanstreak, and their three children. A fan of bodybuilding, he dedicates time to weight training and is a practicing Catholic. Petrucci's faith and personal experiences often inspire his songwriting, making him a deeply reflective artist.
