Early Life

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was born on July 27, 1977, in Dublin, Ireland, as the first of four boys in a Catholic family. His mother, Geraldine, was a homemaker, and his father, John O'Keeffe, was a folk musician. Growing up in County Cork, Meyers faced challenges in his early education, being expelled from North Monastery Christian Brothers School for truancy. However, his life took a turn when casting agents discovered him in a pool hall, leading him to pursue a career in acting.

Career

Meyers adopted his stage name to stand out and made his acting debut in the film "A Man of No Importance" (1994). He gained recognition for his roles in notable films such as "Michael Collins" (1996), "Velvet Goldmine" (1998), and "Bend It Like Beckham" (2002). His breakthrough came with Woody Allen's "Match Point" (2005), which earned him a Chopard Trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. He also starred as Elvis Presley in the CBS miniseries "Elvis" (2005), winning a Golden Globe Award for his performance. Meyers is well-known for his portrayal of King Henry VIII in the historical drama series "The Tudors" (2007-2010), which garnered him multiple Golden Globe nominations.

Personal Life

Meyers has faced personal struggles, including battles with alcohol addiction and mental health issues, leading to hospitalizations in 2011 and 2016. He was in a long-term relationship with Reena Hammer from 2004 to 2012 and married Mara Lane in 2016, with whom he has a son. The couple separated in 2022. Despite his challenges, Meyers has continued to work in the entertainment industry, receiving honors such as the Legend Award at The Irish Post Awards in 2014 for his contributions to film and television.
