Early Life

Jonathan Richard Guy Greenwood, known as Jonny Greenwood, was born on November 5, 1971, in Oxford, England. He grew up in a family with historical ties to the Communist Party of Great Britain and the socialist Fabian Society, although his parents were not particularly musical. Despite this, they supported Greenwood and his older brother, Colin, by driving them to band rehearsals. Greenwood's early exposure to music came from listening to a limited selection of cassettes, including classical pieces and rock bands like the Beat and New Order. His first instrument was a recorder, and he later played the viola in school orchestras, showcasing his commitment to music from a young age.

Career

Greenwood's musical journey took a significant turn when he joined the band On a Friday, which later became known as Radiohead. The band released their debut album, "Pablo Honey," in 1993, featuring the hit single "Creep," which catapulted them to fame. Greenwood's innovative guitar work was pivotal in defining Radiohead's sound, particularly on subsequent albums like "The Bends" and "OK Computer." Jonny Greenwood is married to Israeli visual artist Sharona Katan, whom he met during a Radiohead concert in Israel. They have three children, raised in a Jewish household, and maintain cultural traditions. The family splits their time between Oxford and their farm in Marche, Italy, where Greenwood has recently begun selling olive oil.
