Early Life

Judy Holliday, born Judith Tuvim on June 21, 1921, in Queens, New York, was the only child of Abe and Helen Tuvim, both of Russian-Jewish descent. Her father was a political activist and executive director of the Jewish National Fund, while her mother was a piano teacher. Holliday's stage name, derived from the Hebrew term "yamim tovim" meaning "holidays," reflects her cultural heritage. She graduated from Julia Richman High School and began her career as an assistant switchboard operator at the Mercury Theatre, where she was introduced to the world of performance.

Career

Holliday's show business journey began in 1938 with a nightclub act called The Revuers, alongside notable talents like Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The group performed in various prestigious venues, and in 1944, she made her film debut in "Winged Victory." Her Broadway debut followed in 1945 with "Kiss Them for Me," earning her the Clarence Derwent Award for Most Promising Female Actor. Holliday's career flourished in the 1950s, highlighted by her Tony Award-winning performance in the musical "Bells Are Ringing," which she later reprised in the film adaptation. Despite facing challenges, including a throat tumor that affected her career, she remained a beloved figure in traditional pop music and theater until her passing in 1965.

Personal Life

In 1948, Holliday married clarinetist David Oppenheim, with whom she had a son, Jonathan, before their divorce in 1957. She later had a significant relationship with jazz musician Gerry Mulligan. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, solidifying her legacy as a talented actress, comedian, and singer.
