Early Life

Julie Deborah Kavner was born on September 7, 1950, in Los Angeles, California, to Rose and David Kavner. Growing up in Southern California, she developed a passion for acting early on, stating, "There was nothing else I wanted to do, ever." Despite her struggles in high school, where she felt like a loner and faced challenges in landing roles, she pursued her dreams by attending San Diego State University, majoring in drama. There, she honed her skills in both comedy and drama, becoming known for her improvisational talent.

Career

Kavner's career took off when she was cast as Brenda Morgenstern, the younger sister of Valerie Harper's character in the sitcom "Rhoda," which aired from 1974 to 1978. Her performance earned her critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1978. Following her success on "Rhoda," she made guest appearances on shows like "Taxi" and starred in films such as "Bad Medicine" and "Surrender." However, it was her iconic voice role as Marge Simpson on the animated series "The Simpsons" that solidified her place in television history, where she also voices several other characters, including Marge's mother and sisters.

Personal Life

Kavner is known for her intensely private lifestyle, often described as "nearly reclusive." She lived in Manhattan during the 1990s and was in a long-term relationship with producer David Davis until his death in 2022. Kavner, who identifies as Jewish, has expressed a love for athletics and follows a pescetarian diet.
