Kamal Haasan was born on November 7, 1954, in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil Brahmin family. His father, D. Srinivasan Iyengar, was a lawyer and freedom fighter, while his mother, Rajalakshmi, was a housewife. Initially named Parthasarathy after a deity, he was later renamed Kamal Haasan, with 'Kamal' meaning lotus and 'Hassan' deriving from the Sanskrit word for laughter. Growing up in a family that valued education and the arts, he was encouraged by his father to pursue his interests in film and fine arts, which led him to move to Chennai for further education.
