Biography
Early Life and Education
Karl Richter was born in Plauen, Germany, to Christian Johannes Richter, a Protestant pastor, and Clara Hedwig Richter. His musical journey began in Dresden, where he was a member of the prestigious Dresdner Kreuzchor. He later moved to Leipzig, where he graduated in 1949, studying under notable figures such as Günther Ramin, Karl Straube, and Rudolf Mauersberger.
Career
In 1949, shortly after his graduation, Richter became the organist at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, a position once held by Johann Sebastian Bach. During his time there, he notably prepared a special performance of Bach's "St. Anne" Prelude and Fugue for the inauguration of Bach's new grave. In 1952, he relocated to Munich, where he taught organ at the University of Music and Performing Arts and served as cantor and organist at St. Mark's Church. The following year, he founded the Münchener Bach-Chor and later the Münchener Bach-Orchester, both of which gained international acclaim for their interpretations of Bach's works. Richter's career flourished in the 1960s and 1970s as he recorded extensively and toured globally, including performances in Japan, the United States, and Eastern Europe. Notably, in 1977, a recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 by his orchestra was included on the Voyager Golden Record, showcasing Earth's cultural diversity.
Legacy
Richter's contributions to classical and Baroque music have left a lasting impact, particularly through his recordings and performances that continue to resonate with audiences today. He passed away in 1981, but his legacy lives on through the ensembles he founded and the music he championed.
